Panic seeping in. My handbags/pockets/purse are empty. I've looked everywhere. The front door/back gate/car trunk is securely closed, so they couldn't/mustn't/weren't able to have fallen out there. Could it be I dropped them at the grocery store/park/coffee shop?
I remember I had them just before lunch/dinner/a walk, but that was hours/minutes/an eternity ago. My mind races to retrace my steps. Ugh, this is frustrating!

The car doors slammed shut with a deafening thud. A chilling dread me as the weight of my predicament settled in. Locked this metal cage, I felt a surge of helplessness.
